Cookies and localStorage are different
Cookies are small values that a browser can send with requests to a website. LocalStorage keeps values in browser storage for a particular website and does not automatically attach them to requests. This site’s preference controls use localStorage rather than an HTTP cookie.

What is not included
The supplied pages do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies, cross-site tracking pixels, third-party video embeds or social-media widgets. The Contact draft is not saved in localStorage. Copying or downloading a question creates a device-level copy only when you request it.
Change or remove a preference
Select Essential Only to replace a previous acceptance, or Reset preference to remove the stored value. These controls apply to this browser and website origin. Other devices, browsers and private-browsing sessions have separate storage. Your browser’s privacy controls can also remove all site data; doing so may remove preferences supplied by other website features.
If storage is blocked
The reading pages and research explainers remain available if localStorage is unavailable. A status message will explain if the preference could not be saved. Restricting JavaScript disables the local writing tool and preference controls but does not prevent access to the editorial content.
